It affected us deeply

Former Royal AM left-back Thabo Matlaba has experienced more ups than downs in the last few months - from seeing his side go under SARS curatorship, to the team being expelled by the PSL before he joined Golden Arrows.

Behind the fearless footballer is a man shaped by humble beginnings, family values, and a deep sense of responsibility. In this wide-ranging interview with Soccer Laduma’s Masebe Qina, Matlaba opens up about his shock exit from Royal AM, the impact on his teammates, career highlights, his love for Orlando Pirates, and the honest conversations that shaped the course of his career - including a revealing moment involving club boss Dr Irvin Khoza.
Masebe Qina: Festival, congratulations on your move to Golden Arrows. How are you feeling about this new chapter in your career?
Thabo Matlaba: Thank you. But with regard to Golden Arrows and anything related to the team, I'd prefer that the club speaks on my behalf. I hope you understand.
MQ: We respect that. Moving on, your exit from Royal AM came under difficult circumstances following the club’s PSL membership cancellation. How did that affect you personally and professionally?
TM: To be honest, it’s one of the saddest things to ever happen in PSL history. No one expected a club's membership to be terminated while there were still games remaining. I had hoped for a resolution, but unfortunately, it came down to the club's membership being revoked — a heartbreaking decision caused by circumstances beyond the club’s control. It affected us deeply as players. We thought we’d still get a chance to play those remaining games. We hadn’t played competitive football since December. Then suddenly, you find yourself out of contract. That's extremely difficult for any player.
MQ: What was it like for the players waiting for the PSL’s decision during all those weeks?
TM: Like everyone else, we waited for the outcome. The club kept updating us on what was happening. From the PSL’s side, we were in the dark — we were never called or briefed. But Royal AM’s management did their best to keep us informed.

I'm expecting fireworks
It's going to be an interesting Nedbank Cup semifinal matchup, and we must remember that Milford FC went all the way to the semifinal of last year’s tournament.

It's not easy to play for his team
Polokwane City defender Sapholwethu Kelepu did not pay his dues, he overpaid them. The 26-year-old started his career in high school before working his way to the Betway Premiership. Soccer Laduma's Siya Gijana conversed with the defender about his journey from amateur level to the Betway Premiership. The Lady Frere-born footballer also spoke about his injury setback, his PSL debut against Orlando Pirates, his objectives and more.

I can still remember those words
Bafana Bafana played two international friendlies against Panama at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday evening and then Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday night. The games, as you all know, finished 1-1 and 2-1 respectively with the visitors recording a draw and a win against us. Obviously, these were preparatory matches although we would have loved to win both of them to build our confidence and momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. I'm pretty sure coach Hugo Broos had some of his questions answered in both games as he gave some players a run. With the game being the teacher, it was important for the players to be given a chance to prove themselves and I think most of them grabbed the chance with both hands. I must thank the supporters for coming out in numbers for both games. You guys were unbelievable and created such an atmosphere for the players to give their best.

Not many countries in Africa would pass on the opportunity to play against Brazil or Argentina in an international friendly, but sometimes it’s easier said than done.

It does hurt
Luther Singh is on fire in Cyprus, scoring goals and providing assists for AEL Limassol, week in and week out. Yet the striker has not been called up again to the national team since coach Hugo Broos' first camp with Bafana Bafana five years ago. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Tiyani wa ka Mabasa, Singh reflects on his great time in Cyprus and finally breaks his silence on being snubbed for national duty.

There is no time to breathe
It's been 17 months since German coach Sead Ramovic resigned from TS Galaxy, live on television. He had been with the Rockets for three years, but felt it was time for a new challenge, which led to him joining Tanzanian club Young Africans SC. His stay at Yanga wasn't long – approximately 80 days, but Ramovic had made an impact with nine wins in 13 games. However, there was a bigger challenge and it came in the form of Algerian side, CR Belouizdad. After leading the club to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, which is their first time in 30 years, Ramovic granted Soccer Laduma's Tiyani wa ka Mabasa an exclusive interview. The German-born coach also responds to questions about whether he's ready to make peace with Rhulani Mokwena, who clashed with him when they were still in the PSL.

It makes me very happy
Reneilwe Letsholonyane made the brave move to the Botswana Premier League to join Matebele FC, where he was given time to settle in without being placed under too much pressure by management. It hasn't been an easy journey for the former Bafana Bafana midfielder, but he's found his feet and is in a good position to improve on the club's 12th-place finish last season. With six matches left to play this season, Letsholonyane is determined to work hard to help the club finish in a respectable position. Soccer Laduma's Tshepang Mailwane spoke to the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder to talk about his season thus far in Botswana and where his team has improved since he took over.
