Nearly 4,000 people are on the waiting list for a council home in South Tyneside, new figures show.
Figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) show there were 3,882 households on the borough's social housing register, as of March-a slight increase from 3,835 in 2024.
Housing charity Shelter said people have been pushed into homelessness after successive governments have "failed to build enough genuinely affordable social rent homes".
