Murty delighted to see young Cats make progressive moves
Shields Gazette
|January 21, 2026
Sunderland Under-21s head coach Graeme Murty has spoken in detail about a trio of recent transfer developments involving the club's young players, following his side's Premier League 2 draw with Newcastle United at the Academy of Light.
Murty was asked first about Ben Middlemas, who has completed a permanent move to Swindon Town on a two-and-a-half-year deal, bringing his Sunderland spell to an end, having joined the club as a child and advancing through every level at the Academy of Light.
"I think it speaks well of his approach," Murty said.
"He has been up there with the better midfielders in Premier League 2 for the last two years. I'm surprised, if I'm honest, it's taken this long for him to have that recognition. The staff love working with him.
"He's been a credit to himself and his family over his time here, and we wish him nothing but success.
