SIR Winston Churchill's love of painting was more than just a hobby - it was a refuge, a creative outlet and a source of immense joy throughout his life.
He first picked up a brush in 1915 during a difficult period in his political career, and from that moment, painting became a lifelong passion. Churchill created over 500 paintings, often capturing landscapes, seascapes and the gardens of his home, Chartwell.
He found solace in the act of painting, describing it as a way to escape the pressures of leadership and politics. In his essay Painting as a Pastime, he reflected: “Painting is a companion with whom one may walk a great part of life’s journey.”
