Western Cape emphasises early Clubfoot treatment
Sentinel News
|June 12, 2026
As World Clubfoot Day was observed on Wednesday, June 3, the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment of clubfoot, a congenital condition that affects thousands of children worldwide.
Clubfoot, medically known as congenital talipes equinovarus, occurs when one or both feet are turned inward and downward at birth. Although the condition may appear severe, it is one of the most successfully treated congenital orthopaedic conditions.
Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Professor Anria Horn, said clubfoot is highly treatable when identified early and managed appropriately.
“With increased awareness and timely intervention, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to walk, run, and live a full, active life,” she said.
According to provincial health, the experiences of two children, 13-year-old Jessica Lukoji and two-year-old Amara Bedja, demonstrate the positive outcomes that can be achieved through early treatment.
