Salcombe yawl and magnificent psychedelic trike are up for grabs

AT least two firsts will be established in next week's two day auction at The Old School Saleroom in Messingham when a Salcombe yawl and a magnificent psychedelic motorcycle trike go under the hammer amid all the jewellery, silver, ceramics, collectables and antique treasures.

The Salcombe yawl is a small sailing boat of an 18th century design that was originally created for fishing in the Salcombe Estuary.

Strong currents and a narrow channel out to sea apparently required boats that could work to windward and were stable enough to be operated safely even if they were sailed short-handed.

Two hundred years later they are still built by craftsmen using traditional materials and clinker construction, but these days for racing rather than fishing.
