Atwood says a dystopian regime such as the one in her 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale is a “perennial possibility”.The author, 86, added she was scared to write it as it was “quite bonkers”, although she made sure everything in it had happened somewhere.

Atwood, who has just released Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts, was speaking to Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4.
