CHEESE really can give you nightmares, scientists have confirmed.

Lactose intolerance can cause bloating and stomach pain, affecting sleep quality and bringing on bad dreams.

Researchers asked 1,082 students about their sleep quality, dreams and any perceived link between the food they ate and different kinds of dreams.

Around a third of them reported regular nightmares and two in five said they thought eating late at night or having certain foods affected their sleep.

One in four believed that particular foods could make their sleep worse.
