'Was the sacrifice worth it? I'm sorry to say it was not...'
Scottish Daily Express
|November 08, 2025
A SECOND World War veteran is close to tears as he says the state of the country today means the ultimate sacrifice made by his fallen comrades was “not worth it".
Veteran Alec Penstone, who is 100 years old, was just 15 when the Second World War broke out and he joined the Royal Navy as soon as he was old enough to fight for his country.
He served on submarines and on an aircraft carrier and was involved in the Arctic convoys to Russia, before taking part in the D-Day landings.
