SNP blamed for Scots' lower life expectancy

SCOTLAND has been branded the “sick man of Western Europe” as grim new life expectancy figures showed that Scots live shorter lives than those in comparable countries.

Even within other nations and regions of the UK, Scotland sits bottom of the table, two years behind England.

National Records of Scotland published new data which did show life expectancy was slightly improv ing but remains low compared to similar countries. In 2022-24, life expectancy for Scots was two years lower than England for females and males at 81.06 for women and 77.12 for men. Going south gets you 79.39 for males and 83.3 for females. Wales is third on the list and there is still a substantial gap of a year, at 82.17 for women and 78.25 for men. The UK average is 83.02 and 79.12, respectively.
