FROM YASMIN SYED in Melbourne FRANCESCA JONES was left "kicking and screaming" after an injury wrecked her Australian Open campaign in the first round.

The 25-year-old was in tears as she retired mid-match while facing qualifier Linda Klimovicova.

Jones received attention from the physio several times and sobbed during her final round of treatment on the court, calling it quits with Klimovicova leading 6-2 3-2.

The Brit, who also retired from the Auckland quarterfinals and withdrew from the Hobart International, said: "It kills me that it's here, because this Slam, I absolutely adore.

"It was my first main-draw Slam I ever played. It's now my first direct entry.
