Fringe hub backtracks over single-sex toilets
Scottish Daily Express
|August 07, 2025
A LEADING Edinburgh Fringe venue has been forced into a U-turn over failing to provide single-sex toilets, despite the Supreme Court ruling on the issue.

Underbelly Bristo Square had posted a disclaimer below the sign for the female toilets telling attendees to “use whichever toilet best fits your identity or expression”.
The men’s toilets displayed a similar note but individual cubicles appeared to still be labelled “gents”.
Pictures of the facilities published on social media caused anger among women and gender critical campaigners, who said the venue was potentially breaking the law.
Photographer Iain Masterton, who took pictures of the signs, said he asked an attendant if he could use the female toilets and was told he could.
Underbelly is understood to have been approached by Tory Edinburgh MSPs and changed its position.
