Festive lights workers threatened over flag removal

POLITICAL leaders in Aberdeen have issued a joint statement condemning "disgraceful" incidents of workers being threatened while taking down flags to put up Christmas lights.

Flags, including the Saltire, have been hung on lampposts in areas of some towns and cities around the country in recent months amid concerns over immigration.

Aberdeen City Council said flags are being removed to hang festive lights to ensure the decorations can be installed safely.

The council's political group leaders said they have been left "appalled" after workers carrying out this work were subjected to verbal threats. The most serious disruption has occurred in Kincorth, where council-contracted teams were forced to abandon installation works after being accosted.
