A DRIVER who killed his girlfriend faces jail despite claiming the victim caused the fatal crash.

- By James Mulholland

Stephen Allan told jurors that Rebecca Sivyer grabbed the steering wheel of his Vauxhall Corsa.

However, the High Court in Edinburgh heard Allan admit that this was the first time he had made this claim since the crash in August 2021.

Allan, 33, was driving on the A94 in Coupar Angus in Perthshire with Rebecca as his passenger.

Investigators said they believed that Allan, a delivery driver, had used his mobile phone just before losing control of the car.

It crossed on to the opposite side of the road and hit a fence and then a tree.

The crash left Rebecca, a mother, with serious injuries. She died in hospital, aged 23.

Despite the evidence, Allan, from Alyth, Perthshire, denied any wrongdoing.

He told his defence advocate Gary Allan KC: "She grabbed the steering wheel.
