He met grieving family 'out of respect'
THE Scottish Police Federation (SPF) is considering a legal challenge after the chairman of the Sheku Bayoh inquiry declined to stand aside over claims of inappropriate dealings with the dead man's family.
Lord Bracadale had been at the centre of a row over his handling of the investigation into the death of the young father-of-two more than 10 years ago.
But yesterday, the judge, who has more than half a century of legal expertise, announced he would be remaining in post.
A spokesman for the inquiry said: "After careful consideration of written and oral submissions from core participants, Lord Bracadale has decided not to recuse himself or terminate the appointments of the assessors.
"Having regard to the relevant legal test he has determined there is no apparent bias.
"Taking into account various considerations in respect of the handling of the inquiry, he has determined having meetings with the families was not unfair."
Mr Bayoh, 31, died after being restrained by officers in Fife during May 2015. It followed reports of a man brandishing a knife.
