Bring on the butterflies

Butterflies are enchanting, from the brilliant red admiral and shimmering common blue to the ever-present cabbage white and charming peacock with its eye-spot wings.

They start their lives in an extraordinary way, growing from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis to butterfly.

They have four wings rather than two, and fascinatingly, they taste through their feet. When landing on plants, receptors on their legs detect whether a plant is suitable for feeding or egg laying. Since butterflies rely on warmth to fly, you will often see them basking in the sun with wings spread wide.
