Brexit reversal fears as MPs back customs union talks with EU

MPS HAVE voted to start talks with the European Union about creating a new customs union — a move that could begin the reversal of Brexit.

Most Labour MPs abstained in the Commons vote, after the party’s manifesto ruled out rejoining the existing EU customs union.

But 13 voted in favour of the UK holding talks with the bloc, while just three voted against it.

The vote on the Liberal Democrat Bill was tied, with 100 MPs voting each way.

Under House of Commons conventions, the Speaker then voted in favour, allowing the debate to continue.

Nightmare

It meant a proposed law that would require the government to begin talks with the EU passed its first hurdle in the Commons. However, further votes will be required before the legislation can come into force.
