Barry backs best gaffer he worked with for Ibrox job

BARRY BANNAN regards Danny Rohl as the best manager he's ever worked with - a German coach built for football here and the ideal candidate to finally get Rangers challenging for Premiership titles again.

- BY SCOTT MCDERMOTT

If Gers fans have any doubts about Rohl becoming their club's new boss, they might want to listen to the Sheffield Wednesday captain.

Supporters were left disappointed on Saturday night when news emerged that Steven Gerrard had pulled out of the race to take over from axed Russell Martin.

Almost immediately, 36-year-old Rohl became the new bookies’ favourite.

And, after impressing during initial talks with the Rangers’ hierarchy, he's now a leading candidate for the role.

A near 20-month stint at Hillsborough in the English Championship - his first gig a manager - isn't usually the criteria to earn a crack at the Rangers hotseat.

And his record of 34 wins and 34 losses from 89 games in charge doesn't exactly make for thrilling reading.

But Bannan, his Owls captain, believes the former defender is made for the job and is certain, if Rohl gets the backing of the Ibrox support, that he can get their club back competing for honours again.

Bannan has hailed the former Bayern Munich assistant boss for his tactical prowess, adaptability, passion and, vitally, a will to succeed.

And, crucially for the Rangers support, he says he’s not a clone of sacked Martin.

Bannan said: “Danny is the best manager I've worked with in my career.

“He's so confident. When he came to Sheffield Wednesday, it was his first manager's job.

“He'd been assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern and Germany.

“When he arrived, I was thinking, ‘He's the same age as me’, so I expected him to be quite shy.
