Governor Shapiro Directs $219.9 Million in Additional Capital Funding to SEPTA to Support Urgent Safety Upgrades and Infrastructure Improvements Across System.

This funding is intended to support urgent safety upgrades and infrastructure improvements.

In response to recent directives from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Shapiro Administration's action will help SEPTA comply with federal orders, expedite necessary repairs, and maintain safe and reliable service for the nearly 800,000 Pennsylvanians who depend on SEPTA daily. The Governor made this announcement at SEPTA's Frazer Shop & Yard in Chester County.

"Nearly 800,000 Pennsylvanians rely on SEPTA every single day whether to get to school, work, medical appointments, or other essential destinations," said Governor Shapiro. "Mass transit is critical to our economy, our communities, and the daily lives of Pennsylvanians. My Administration is committed to providing SEPTA with the funding it needs to make essential repairs, meet federal safety requirements, and restore full service but we also need a long-term solution. I will continue to advocate for additional ongoing funding for mass transit in Harrisburg so we can invest in transit systems, including SEPTA, across the Commonwealth."

This funding initiative comes after Senate Republicans declined to support long-term, recurring funding for mass transit in the upcoming 2025-26 budget. Consequently, SEPTA has struggled to secure the necessary capital resources to implement urgent safety improvements mandated by federal authorities.
