Philadelphia is a welcoming city rather than a sanctuary city.

- Lorraine Lavender-Sams

Councilmember Rue Landau hosted a Wednesday, January 22, 2025, hearing discussing Resolution 24109, which she introduced. The resolution examines the City of Philadelphia's preparedness to protect the civil rights of underserved communities and marginalized populations as the Trump presidency takes shape. The hearing was chaired by Councilmember Katherine Gilmore-Richardson, with Councilmember Kendra Brooks serving as co-chair.

Representatives from Mayor Cherelle Parker's office, the School District of Philadelphia, the District Attorney's Office, non-profits, and advocacy groups gathered at the hearing to engage in dialog furthering the rights and protections to ensure that the City of Philadelphia continues to be welcoming for everyone.

Ahead of the hearing, city leaders clarified that Philadelphia was declared a "First Amendment City" in 2017, which is a symbolic designation that does not change the city's laws or policies. It simply affirms Philadelphia's commitment to protecting the rights of all residents, including immigrants, to exercise their freedom of speech and assembly.

Holiday Nostalgia

Nostalgia. If there was ever a word I could most closely associate with my favorite parts of the holiday season, it's nostalgia.Of course, being a Millennial who grew up in Philadelphia, nothing sparks more nostalgia for me than the Christmas Light show at John Wanamaker's department store.
