Liverpool icon Owen reflects on African legacy

|January 17, 2026
LIVERPOOL football legend Michael Owen has highlighted the indispensable contributions of African players to the English Premier League in the evolving football landscape.
With a history of stellar talents gracing the pitch, Africa’s influence on the league has been both significant and transformative. The retired football icon acknowledged that while many exceptional players hail from the African continent, some may remain unseen by larger audiences.
“There may be some fantastic players that just don’t get seen. But what we do know is that Africa, in general, as a continent, does provide outstanding players,” he articulated, highlighting the rich footballing talent bubbling beneath the surface.
On Wednesday, Owen stepped into the South African spotlight in Durban, where he was named the newest brand ambassador for Hollywoodbets, the country’s leading sports betting brand.
Over the years, iconic African footballers have not only made their mark in England but have also been pivotal to the Premier League's success. “Great players like Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Yaya and Kolo Touré, and Mo Salah come from Africa,” he noted, referencing these legends whose prowess has left an indelible mark on both their clubs and the league.
Africa’s role in the Premiership is a testament to its eclectic spirit, which prides itself on being a global stage where the world’s best talents converge. “The Premier League loves having African players,” the legend remarked, asserting that they have become an integral part of the league’s appeal.
