IN our chaotic and fast-paced world, emotional intelligence helps us to be successful in our work and remain satisfied with our lives.

- HARVEY DEUTSCHENDORF

Sometimes also referred to as emotional quotient (EQ), emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage emotions. It’s a vitally important skill because it can help you improve your interpersonal relationships, both personally and professionally. The benefits of emotional intelligence in the workplace include being able to better understand nonverbal cues, properly adjust your behaviour, make good decisions and become a respected leader. Emotionally intelligent people are able to handle interpersonal relationships empathetically and are much better equipped to achieve their professional goals.

We often focus on what it means to be emotionally intelligent, and what actions emotionally intelligent people take. However, we rarely ask what things emotionally intelligent people don’t do.

Here are several habits emotionally intelligent people avoid at all costs:

React impulsively or suppress

Emotionally intelligent people know how important it is to not act impulsively. They understand that they are vulnerable in situations where they experience strong feelings, and have trained themselves to wait until their emotions settle down.

They are able to think through how to respond, instead of reacting from their emotions resulting in better decision-making and fewer regrets.
