Embracing diversity in human family

THE World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development — observed annually on May 21 — is a reminder of the beauty and richness of the world's diverse cultures, and of the need to value, and embrace the diversity in the human family.

The differences of colour and culture are what enriches the world of humanity. Diversity of talents and temperaments, varied and rich cultures, viewpoints, and experiences, contribute to humanity's progress and well-being.

The Bahá'í International Community states: “the immense wealth of cultural diversity achieved over thousands of years is vital to the social and economic development of a human race experiencing its collective coming-of-age. It represents a heritage that must be permitted to bear its fruit in a global civilisation”.

The current misconceptions and prejudices, and the erroneous idea that considers one ethnic or cultural group above the other, are major contributors to disunity, and lack of co-operation in resolving global challenges.

To achieve unity among the people of different backgrounds, and cultures, there is need for fundamental changes in all aspects of behaviour, and by overcoming prejudices towards any group that we may, consciously or unconsciously, harbour.
