Date set for town's 900th celebrations

Excitement builds as launch confirmed for next week

It’s an event 900 years in the making — and the big launch date has been confirmed for Thursday, January 29.

In 2026, the historic Royal Burgh of Rutherglen marks a truly remarkable milestone — nine centuries since its charter was granted in 1126, making it one of Scotland’s oldest royal burghs.

To commemorate this momentous anniversary, a programme of cultural and community events has been created for across the year bringing together residents, organisations, schools and volunteers in activities rooted in five central themes: heritage, arts, wellbeing, sport and the environment.

Rutherglen 900 is a community-led initiative created to celebrate the town’s 900th anniversary and the organising committee have been working hard to honour the town’s rich cultural legacy and bright future.

And next week's event at Rutherglen Town Hall will be official launch of the yearlong programme of events.
