Widnes fall short in pursuit of Edge target

WIDNES went to Alderley Edge seeking their first league win of the season following defeats to Hyde and Oxton in the opening two rounds.

However, they left Moss Lane disappointed, falling to a third straight defeat, this time by 53 runs.

The match began with Widnes winning the toss and electing to bat first on a good-looking wicket.

Under the watchful eye of former England captain Michael Vaughan, the Widnes opening bowlers made a bright start.

Both Avran Shetty and Will Valentine fell early victims to Trent McKeenan and when the same bowler had Sam Perry caught by Chris Kirby for 26, Alderley had slumped to 59 for 3.

Patrick Ashling began a mini rival, making 29, before being deceived by a flighted delivery from Tom Evans, with Kirby making a smart stumping.
