Food Safety — saves lives and plays a vital role in reducing food borne disease
-
The 2025 World Food Safety Day report aimed to promote a global commitment to ensuring food safety and reducing the burden of foodborne illnesses.
Food safety saves lives. It is not only a crucial component to food security, but it also plays a vital role in reducing foodborne disease. Every year, 600 million people fall sick as a result of around 200 different types of foodborne illness. The burden of such illness falls most heavily on the poor and on the young. In addition, foodborne illness is responsible for 420 000 preventable deaths every year.
World Food Safety Day is an important way of:
- making people aware of food safety issues
- demonstrating how to prevent illness through food safety
- discussing collaborative approaches to improved food safety across sectors
- promoting solutions and ways of being more food safe
The concept envisions India as a leading global power, with high standards of living, equitable growth, and environmental stewardship. To further this vision, the NSC has decided that the theme for NSD-2025 as: "Safety & Well-being Crucial for Viksit Bharat
The 2025 World Food Safety Day report, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), focused on the theme "Food Safety: Science in Action".
This theme highlighted the importance of scientific knowledge and its application in ensuring food safety across the entire food chain. The report emphasized that food safety is not just about knowledge, but about putting that knowledge into action to prevent foodborne illnesses and save lives.
