The Hollow Heart of Modern Life
Punjab Times (English Edition)
|May 06, 2025
In an age where human civilisation stands adorned with the finest threads of technology, automation, and luxury, a profound irony confronts us - the world has never felt so empty.
Despite the proliferation of conveniences once confined to the realm of science fiction - from artificial intelligence that can pre-empt our thoughts to apps that place meals at our doorstep in minutes - the collective mood of humanity is anything but jubilant. The air is heavy, tinged with fatigue and disquiet. While economists debate whether a global recession is looming - thanks, in part, to erratic leadership and geopolitical gambits led by populist figures in the West - there is no ambiguity about the psychological recession already underway. The planet is awash not just in climate crises and economic uncertainty, but in a wave of quiet despair that slips through societies both rich and poor, democratic and autocratic, connected and isolated.
We are living in what should be the best of times. Healthcare has extended lifespans. Knowledge is no longer a privilege of the elite but is broadcast instantly across the globe. Luxury is not confined to the few - it is mass-produced, commodified, and sold on demand. Yet, in this era of superabundance, a strange hollowness persists. Mental health statistics continue their alarming climb. Cases of anxiety, depression, and burnout have become epidemic, not confined to conflict zones or impoverished regions but thriving even - perhaps especially - in places of affluence and high digital connectivity. This paradox begs deeper interrogation: why, with so much progress, do we feel so profoundly lost?
