Shrinking Earth and Its Resources

Punjab Times (English Edition)

August 09, 2025

In a physical sense, the size of our planet has remained constant, but in a practical sense, it often feels as though the Earth is becoming smaller with each passing decade.

This “shrinking” is not about geography; it is about capacity. As the human population grows, cities expand, technology advances, and consumption habits intensify, the available space, resources, and environmental stability on which we depend seem to diminish. Over the past hundred years, we have moved from a world of perceived abundance to one where scarcity, competition, and environmental limits are shaping our future. To understand this change, one may imagine a banquet hall designed for 200 guests, with enough food, water, and seating for everyone. Over time, the guest list swells to 500, yet the hall's size and resources remain unchanged. Suddenly, comfort turns into crowding, sufficiency into shortage, and cooperation into competition. This is the reality of our modern Earth - a planet not physically smaller, but under greater strain from the demands of its inhabitants.
