The New Saudi-Pak Pact
-
As Riyadh flexes influence and Islamabad seeks relief, the Middle East chessboard shifts
Pakistan gains relevance, while daydreaming to become the harbinger of the “Islamic-NATO”. Saudi Arabia at the same time gains insurance and prestige but the risks are real, for such vague promises can create miscalculations, heighten suspicions in India, Israel, and the U.S., and entangle both states in conflicts that may stretch beyond their intent.
On September 9, 2025, Israel launched an airstrike in Doha, Qatar, targeting Hamas leaders. The strike resulted in the deaths of five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. Despite Qatar's status as a key U.S. ally and host to significant American military forces, the attack raised concerns about regional security and the reliability of international alliances.
In response, Saudi Arabia condemned the attack as a violation of Qatar's sovereignty and expressed unwavering support for Doha. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized the need for Arab, Islamic, and international action to confront such aggression. This solidarity underscores the Kingdom's commitment to regional stability and the protection of its allies.
The incident has prompted discussions among Gulf States about enhancing regional defense mechanisms and reassessing security partnerships. Saudi Arabia's swift and resolute response highlights its role as a key player in Middle Eastern geopolitics and its dedication to safeguarding the integrity of the region.
Saudi Arabia's changing Role
Saudi Arabia is trying to change its story. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wants his country to be seen not just as an oil giant but as a modern hub of business and technology. For that, Riyadh needs allies, markets, and influence. Pakistan, with its large population, struggling economy, and strategic geography, makes sense as a partner.
