Awareness Can Save Children From Sexual Assault

Punjab Times (English Edition)

August 31, 2025

There is no doubt in confessing that India,at present is one of the the most unsafe country for both women and children. So many incidents of sexual assault or sexual harassment of children and women are being reported in media each and every day. These reported and many unreported incidents of such kind reveal that the moral degradation in our country has crossed almost all the limits. The heinous incidents of sexual assault, harassment and exploitation of children under the age of 1 year to 14 years are absolutely a big blot on our so called religious, high-principled and highly ethical society.

Children cover 42 % of the total population of the country. As per a survey conducted in the year 2007 by Ministry of women and child welfare, approximately 50% of the total population of children was a confirmed victim of sexual exploitation. As for as the current year 2025 is concerned,a huge number of incidents regarding sexual assault, harassment and exploitation of children reported in print and electronic media reveal that things have turned from worse to the worst.

Although POCSO ACT prescribes severe punishments and penalties in this regard yet almost 85 % of the parents, children, teachers and common people seem to be ignorant to the basics of this so powerful Act.Actuallly on May 12,2012,a Bill regarding formation of POCSO ACT was tabled in RajyaSabha and on May 22,2012,Lok Sabha passed the Bill and on June 19,2012,it was enlisted in Gazzette of India.
