The people must reclaim their streets - and safety

THE largely peace-loving community of Chatsworth has become a sitting duck for violent attacks on residents by criminal elements from neighbouring informal settlements.

While high poverty and unemployment levels contribute to criminality, poor policing is also to blame for the increasing number of violent attacks on residents. The SAPS must allocate more resources in Chatsworth and neighbouring suburbs.

On Monday Jeeva Pillay, 63, died after being shot by an armed robber at the gate of his house.

Last week Jayce Naicker, 45, was shot dead while delivering food to a family.

Pillay was returning home from the temple when he was confronted by an armed robber wanting to gain entry to the house. The robber fired several shots, fatally wounding Pillay and his pet dog.
