A CHATSWORTH pawn shop owner has been arrested and charged with 15 counts of theft after allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth over R1 million from elderly residents.

Barry Naidoo is accused of undervaluing family heirlooms before repawning them at other shops, leaving victims without their precious sentimental items despite making repayments.

Naidoo, 44, the owner of Gold Chest Pawnbrokers in Umhlatuzana, appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Friday on 15 counts of theft.

It has been alleged that Naidoo stole jewellery from the elderly residents under false pretences.

A police source told the POST that Naidoo was allegedly operating the pawn shop legally for many years.

However in recent years Naidoo allegedly undervalued gold items and repawned it at a more reputable pawn shop in Chatsworth.
