Foster intergenerational dialogue

“THE legacy of silence: a letter to our elders”, the POST, July 9-13 refers.

- LES GOVENDER

I would like to take this opportunity to convey my appreciation to the writer/s of the open letter which was addressed to the elders within the Indian community.

The candid and sincere perspectives expressed are both invigorating and intellectually stimulating.

Your willingness to share your perspective and insight on this complex issue is truly appreciated as it encourages me, and hopefully even other elders of the Indian community, to think critically and consider different viewpoints.

I encourage you and other young members of our society to continue sharing your frustrations, ideas, concerns and aspirations.

Your input can help us identify areas for improvement and develop more inclusive and effective solutions.

What your letter is evoking is the importance of intergenerational equity and solidarity which are increasingly important concepts, advocating for a fair distribution of resources and opportunities between generations, both present and future.

Your letter also seeks to break down barriers between generations and to foster a shared understanding of challenges and opportunities. It is my view that the contents of your letter call for an intergenerational dialogue, particularly for those who feel left behind, wounded by the challenges of life.

A dialogue will enable open discussion, perhaps a programme of action to address concerns with observations coming from both ends of the spectrum.

Why everything in SA feels harder than it should be

LIFE in South Africa often feels unusually demanding. Not because South Africans lack resilience or competence, but because everyday living has become an exercise in constant anticipation, adjustment and compensation.
