Young fencers step up
Polokwane Observer
|September 04, 2025
The 2024/25 fencing season closed on August 30 with a competition filled with excitement, upsets, and emotional goodbyes as fencers took to the piste for the last time in their old age categories.
With the new season which started on September 1, this event gave many athletes their final chance to prove themselves before moving up, where several fencers made the most of the opportunity. Precious Thoka claimed her last silver in the women's u/17 épée and also stepped into the u/20 and senior categories from this month.
Frans Ramodike, who secured bronze in the men's u/20 épée, will also make the leap to full senior level, where he will be competing with good competitors. The competition also brought plenty of surprises on the podium as newcomer Thabile Matheta from Frans Mohlala stunned with a double gold in the u/15 and u/17 categories, fencing far beyond expectations.
