Simo Valakari has welcomed the assistance of an American university sports analytics expert for St Johnstone's promotion push.

The Saints manager believes the numbers will be a great guide but stressed they won't always be used as gospel.

Chairman Adam Webb has taken advantage of a relationship with Samford University in Alabama to recruit a data-cruncher for a full-time role.

Valakari met with the guru during his Stateside summer summit with Webb and fellow Perth investors.

There is excitement at the link-up providing key edges for Saints in recruitment and scouting future opponents.

Valakari is keen to marry the analytics of the club's new intern with the football know-how of himself and his backroom staff.

He said: "Football is changing more and more.
