The Western Cape recorded a 14% decrease in road deaths over the Easter period, with 19 fatalities compared to 22 last year.

The provincial government attributes the decline to increased visible policing and stricter law enforcement across major routes.

Traffic officers stopped and checked 44 555 vehicles and made 149 arrests during the period. Of these, 108 were for driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a firm stance against corruption, two motorists were arrested in Citrusdal and Worcester for allegedly attempting to bribe traffic officers.

In a separate incident near Laingsburg, a driver was arrested for allegedly assaulting a traffic officer, driving under the influence, failing to provide his name and address, and resisting arrest.

Nationally, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy reported a 10% decrease in road fatalities between January and mid-March, indicating a positive trend ahead of the Easter period.

Final Easter road statistics are yet to be released.
