SANParks still assessing damages after Tokai fire

The aftermath of the devastating Table Mountain fire that destroyed 3 000 ha of vegetation remained under investigation, South African National Parks (SANParks) said.

On Thursday 1 May, SANParks sent out a low-flying helicopter to survey the Silvermine area to assess the damage to the hiking trails, according to SANParks' head of communications, JP Louw.

"Our helicopter scanned the whole Table Mountain National Park," he said. "We can confirm there were no human fatalities. We will release a report on the damages at the appropriate time."

Previously People's Post reported online that firefighters had been battling blazes that destroyed 3 000 ha of vegetation in the Silvermine, Tokai and Boyes Drive areas of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) since Friday 25 April.

Firefighters were expected to remain on the scene throughout the Friday evening to monitor the areas burnt and conclude with mop-up operations, according to SANParks.
