Scrapping first class is only fare

Train fares in Scotland are far too high.
Peak-time fares were basically a tax on people, generally workers and students, who have no choice over when they travel.
But earlier this month, the Scottish Government finally listened to the Scottish Greens, trade unions and rail users and abolished peak fares permanently.
This followed a trial removal secured by Green MSPs in 2023-24, one which saw 10 million more journeys being taken by train.
Right across the west of Scotland, there are commuters who will now save hundreds of pounds every year as a result of peak time rail fares being abolished.
Those commuting between Paisley and Glasgow will save up to £600 a year-and regular Glasgow to Edinburgh travellers will save thousands of pounds as the cost of that route halves.
