More than 100 children are currently absent from a Renfrewshire school as winter illness continues to cause havoc in classrooms.

- EDEL KENEALY

Almost one fifth of the entire school population at Houston Primary School is currently off ill while nine members of staff are also said to be absent due to sickness.

The news comes as Renfrewshire Council confirms it is monitoring the spread of flu and other winter viruses across the school estate.

The local authority has also this week shared advice from NHS medics on how to manage cold and flu symptoms as part of a letter to all parents of children attending the area's 62 schools and associated nurseries.

A spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council told the Express: “Houston Primary remains open as normal.

“We have put in place enhanced cleaning measures at the school, and can reassure parents all our schools have robust hygiene measures in place.
