Managed migration to Universal Credit
Paisley Daily Express
|June 20, 2025
This week, we are looking at the process faced by people being moved from older “legacy” benefits on to Universal Credit.
-
This process of “managed migration” to Universal Credit is in its final stages.
Each month, there are thousands of people making their claim for Universal Credit.
This may seem a scary, complicated process, so we'll try to run you through this using the example of someone who contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), who we'll call Katy.
Katy is 43 years old and lives in Renfrewshire. She received a managed migration notice.
The letter said that she is currently claiming Employment and Support Allowance and Housing Benefit.
Because legacy benefits - so Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit - are being replaced by Universal Credit, Katy must apply for Universal Credit.
Her local CAB advised her to call the Help to Claim line for support with the claim.
Help to Claim is a free, independent, confidential service at Citizens Advice Scotland.
