Calls for Renfrewshire to pay tax to Glasgow

An SNP group has called on people living in Renfrewshire to pay tax towards Glasgow city services.

Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, wants the Scottish Government to explore ways the city can raise more funds from its outlying areas.

She made the call in a response to the SNP executive's consultation on the future of council tax.

Ms Aitken (pictured right) backed a response from the council that said Glasgow was the "largest and most prominent" example of a local authority that provides services "used by a population significantly larger than its tax base".

The document said this was not "currently reflected in any way through local government financing structures".

It called for Scottish ministers to consider mechanisms to "provide a better geographical balance with regard to local democratic control over resource-raising and to better reflect the variations in levels of service that different local authorities are required to provide".
