Odisha Vigilance Wednesday caught an assistant Commercial Tax and GST (CT & GST) officer red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹12,000 from a businessman in Titilagarh, Bolangir district.

The accused, Umakanta Mahakur, Assistant CT & GST Officer, was apprehended after he allegedly demanded the bribe to waive off a penalty imposed on the complainant for nonpayment of professional tax over three financial years.
According to Vigilance sources, the businessman had defaulted on professional tax payments of ₹2,500 per year, totalling ₹7,500.
