Petition calls for local election not to be put off

NUNEATON and Bedworth’s future ‘hinges on a vital right, a new petition demands.

It calls on the borough council to refuse the Government's offer to delay the planned local elections next year.

Due to be held on May 7 with half of the council's seats, 19, up for grabs, the Town Hall could decide to postpone them under government proposals. This is because of local government reform, which will see Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and all other local authorities in Warwickshire, abolished. The Government said it had ‘received requests from multiple councils’ to postpone local elections in May 2026 and has asked the Town Hall if it wanted to do the same.

Elections to the new councils to replace the current system are expected in May 2027 with them officially being in charge from April 2028.
