The army of volunteers that nature just can't do without
Nottingham Post
|September 06, 2025
BACK in 1993, I accepted the role of volunteer coordinator with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and quickly became aware of a small army of volunteers dedicated to protecting vital natural green spaces, improving their local and sharing their passion with others in the city.
Within weeks I'd got to know volunteers who led walks to showcase hidden wildlife gems, organised clean ups in forgotten corners and gave wildlife a voice in the planning system.
As my role with the Trust developed, I discovered these enthusiastic people in all parts of the county turning their hand to everything from tree planting to baking cakes to raise funds for wildlife projects.
I've had the pleasure of working with hundreds of volunteers and getting to know dozens of people who give up their time to enhance their local patch. I've had the privilege of working alongside people who support activities as varied as leading environmental education sessions in schools to campaigning for climate action and their efforts continue to amaze and inspire me.
As the challenges facing our environment have become clearer over time, the vital role volunteers and community leaders play has become ever clearer.
When the Trust set out to draft our Wilder Nottinghamshire 2030 strategy, we recognised the collective efforts of people across the county must take centre stage.
