GOVERNMENT TELLS COUNCILS: GET ON WITH IT

Pothole power! Find out which 54 county roads will be resurfaced

MORE than 50 roads in Nottingham-shire will get a full resurfacing over the coming year after councils were told to “get on with the job” of fixing potholes.

Nottinghamshire County Council has set out its planned highways maintenance programme for the coming financial year, with £72 million-worth of road improvements.

The schedule is subject to further confirmation, but 54 roads will get a full resurfacing. The council has also confirmed the roads that will be getting smaller scale improvements, like drainage maintenance or large-scale patchwork.

Roads to be resurfaced include part of the Colwick Loop Road and a section of Wilford Lane in West Bridgford. The move comes as the Government confirmed that councils across the country will have to publish reports on their pothole fixing progress to get more money.

The Government has announced an extra £500 million for highway maintenance but if councils do not set out how they are using that cash, a quarter could be withheld.

All councils with responsibility for roads must publish reports by June 30 detailing how much they are spending, how many potholes they have filled and what percentage of their roads are in what condition.

Councils will also be required to show how they are spending more on long-term preventative maintenance programmes and that they have robust plans for wetter winters.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “British people are bored of seeing their politicians aimlessly pointing at potholes with no real plan to fix them.

“That ends with us. We've done our part by handing councils the cash and certainty they need - now it's up to them to get on with the job, put that money to use and prove they’re delivering for their communities.”

Nottinghamshire County Council’s programme includes a total of 224 proposed individual carriageway and footway schemes across the 2,765 miles of highways.
