NHS regulators assessing maternity complaints from 45 families

THE medical bodies that regulate doctors, midwives and nurses are looking into complaints raised by 45 families related to care at Nottingham maternity units.

At least 72 complaints are currently being assessed by the General Medical Council (GMC) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as the organisations ramp up their involvement in the ongoing maternity scandal.

Both bodies have been accused of being "absent" during the unfolding maternity scandal by parents who have suffered harm and lost babies due to failings. Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), which runs the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital, is currently subject to the largest maternity review in NHS history.

Around 2,500 families are now part of the independent inquiry, which is being chaired by expert midwife Donna Ockenden, while a police investigation is ongoing.
