SAVOY HAS SEEN A NUMBER OF FIRSTS
HIGH streets everywhere across the country change rapidly, with businesses coming and going constantly, and big companies taking over units that were once occupied by local independents.
It is, therefore, quite rare to see a business stand the test of time, passing many milestones, such as the Second World War or the Covid-19 pandemic.
But the Savoy Cinema on Derby Road, Lenton, did just that as it celebrated its 90th anniversary on Friday.
The Savoy first opened its doors on November 7, 1935, and quickly established itself as a business that moved with the times and catered to its customers’ needs.
From being the first cinema in the UK to open its own bar, the first independent cinema to subdivide its single large auditorium into three screens and, more recently, invest in new reclining seats, the Savoy has moved with the times.
