Mayhem as cars go up in flames

WITNESSES have described "mayhem" as around five cars were set alight during a spate of suspected arson attacks.

Firefighters attended a car fire in Nottingham Road, Hucknall, at around 8.30pm on Sunday, before being diverted further up the road as more vehicles were set alight.

The road was closed in both directions and a 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and assault of an emergency worker.

Yesterday morning, police cars were still stationed outside four homes within 100 metres of each other, all of which were cordoned off.

The trail of destruction included the shell of a torched car outside a house next to a day nursery and opposite the Bowman pub.

Further down the road was a heavily damaged red Renault, which went up in "massive flames", according to neighbours.
