SKATELAND MUST CLOSE SOON AFTER NINE YEARS OF POPULARITY

- By GEORGE PALMER-SOADY

Joy's search is on for a new roller skating home

THE owner of Nottingham's only roller skating rink says its closure will be a loss of an "affordable option for families" looking for fun in the city.

Joy Cotton set up Skateland in Lenton in 2016 after the city's last indoor rink closed in the 1990s.

"My son really enjoyed roller skating but the closest rink was in Derby so we were having to trek backwards and forwards there several times a week - it felt like Nottingham deserved its own place," Joy told the Post. The venue became a popular option for families, hosting children's birthday parties, lessons and sessions for adults.

However, on May 12, Joy announced the venue would be closing in a matter of months due to planning regulations.

When Skateland moved into the unit on Prospect Place, it was granted temporary permission to operate as a skating rink before work on a planned nearby development began.

"There was always a plan to build houses on the land opposite," Joy said.
