Jason Donovan chats to MARION McMULLEN about shows and songs ahead of his solo tour

Do you have a typical audience for your Doin’ Fine Encore shows? (Chuckles) I think if you try and get into the female toilets in the interval you are going to struggle. I guess a lot of my audience is predominately female, which is a great thing, that is a positive.

I would hope there is a new generation coming through though particularly with those people who were fans in the first place and now they've got kids. There are the odd guys out there as well though they keep a low profile.

What is it like celebrating 35 years of music, theatre, film and TV with your solo shows?

There are more dates coming along and we were ambitious we could continue this good story and so far, so good. I always want to push a little harder. It really worked the last tour and it felt like let's keep going so that is what we are doing.

I’m lucky I can still do what I love and make a living out of it and I love to perform live and I like to produce my own shows.

I’m proud of this show. I think it is authentic and I think we've got the right balance between pop and theatre and nostalgia. It works, it just works.

You are 57 now. What is your secret to staying in shape?

I am pretty disciplined when it comes to performing because I do a lot of theatre work and that in a way is less personal pressure and more endurance. It teaches you a lot doing eight shows a week, it’s full on, but I watch what I eat, I exercise regularly, I steam - looking after my voice is important.

Have you ever had to deal with injuries or sickness on tour?
